Description
This position serves as a healthcare professional who, under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician, will provide care to patients seen at the Stony Brook Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology ambulatory office, located at 3 Technology Drive in East Setauket, NY and the Motility Center located at 3 Edmund D. Pellegrino Road in Stony Brook, NY. The main responsibility of the physician extender will be to help direct operations in the Motility Center with oversight from the collaborating physician, such as obtaining informed consent from patients undergoing motility procedures, supervising motility procedures in the Motility Center, signing of post-procedural notes and interpreting basic motility studies. Additional responsibilities will include seeing new and follow-up patients with predominantly motility disorders to discuss upcoming procedures and divulge results following procedures. The physician extender is expected to maintain and enhance a current level of knowledge relative to professional practice, as well as meet the requirements necessary for licensure and certification.

The following duties will be expected:
  • Obtain informed consent of patients undergoing motility procedures, supervise motility procedures in the Motility Center and complete post-procedural documentation following motility procedures.
  • Collaborate with supervising physician and nursing staff in the facilitation and interpretation of GI motility studies.
  • Care for patients with a variety of acute and chronic GI diseases, including but not limited to disorders of GI motility. This includes both new patient consultations and follow-up visits.
  • Establish a medical diagnosis, order and evaluate diagnostic studies, and prescribe and regulate medications.
  • Assess and/or manage follow-up plans within the protocols and practice plans approved by the supervising physician.


Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Nurse Practitioner: NYS license and certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Master's degree in nursing or completion of a course for a Nurse Practitioner.

Physician Assistant: NYS license and certification as a Physician Assistant. Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of Physician Assistants.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

At least one year, but preferably a minimum of five years of clinical experience working as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner. Previous experience working in gastroenterology, internal medicine, or general surgery. Work experience in gastroenterology with emphasis on outpatient/ambulatory care of patients with gastrointestinal (GI) and motility disorders.
