Position Summary:

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a key member of the Brain & Spine Institute's Inpatient Neurology (Neurohospitalist) Service. Working in collaboration with physicians and the multidisciplinary care team, the APP provides specialized inpatient care for patients with stroke and other complex neurological conditions. This role includes managing neurology consults, responding to acute stroke alerts as part of an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center, and delivering evidence-based, high-quality care. The APP practices within their licensed scope and established protocols, demonstrating advanced clinical knowledge, sound judgment, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous learning and competency development.

Position Qualification:

  • Master of Science Degree required, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate preferred or Adult / Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate with appropriate recent critical care experience

  • Current certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Tennessee

  • Evidence of appropriate recent critical care experience or clinical training

  • Prefer ACLS, ASLS, and CNRN

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct medical care / treatment to the patient presenting with stroke symptoms and other complex neurological conditions within the scope of nursing practice, according to established protocols and utilizes evidenced based clinical standards under the supervision of the sponsoring physician.

  • Performs comprehensive and accurate health history

  • Documents findings appropriately noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings

  • Establishes medical diagnosis based on assessments, interpretation of patient data, comprehensive review of the patient's history, and diagnostic findings

  • Orders, obtains, and interprets diagnostic tests appropriate for the individual patient according to complaint and physical findings

  • Designs, communicates, and orders appropriate treatment plans of care according to current research and evidence

  • Provides patient/family centered care by communicating with the patient / family regarding the treatment plan and the patient response to care

  • Supports Patient and Family centered care by involving the patient and the family in care decisions and adhering to the 8 elements of the model when making treatment decisions

  • Orders medications, therapeutic interventions, nutrition, support services according to protocols and as directed by the collaborating physician

  • Coordinate interdisciplinary care for the patient through consultation with other members of the health care team

  • Arrange admissions and discharges under the supervision of the sponsoring physician

  • Institutes appropriate stabilization measures in emergency situations, according to established protocols, research, and best practices

  • Interprets, analyzes, and evaluates the patient's response to care

  • Evaluates changes in the patient's condition and responses to prescribed therapies, adjusting plan of care as appropriate

  • Institute referrals of patients to the appropriate facilities, resources, and other physicians

  • Participates in professional activities

  • Participates / presents in multidisciplinary rounds

  • Participates in and complies with Performance Improvement, accreditation, compliance, and regulatory initiatives as requested and appropriate

  • Participates in the development and implementation of standards of care, using clinical research findings

  • Participates in the Peer Review process

  • Role models critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Displays responsibility for professional practice through continuing education, maintaining certification and licensure requirements, participating in research activities and written publications

  • Provides clinical expertise and leadership to nursing, other members of the healthcare team, and the community

  • Provides teaching to nurses and other members of the health care team according to evidence based research, and best practice

  • Enhances the professional nursing image through conduct, appearance, communication, leadership, ethical decision-making, and mutual respect

  • Maintains all required training for licensure.

  • Promotes Customer Satisfaction

  • Promotes customer satisfaction through caring, friendly, professional interactions with patients and families

  • Maintains positive interactions with physicians, nursing staff, and other members of the health care team

  • Represents UTMC related to Stroke

  • Participates in Community Stroke Programs

  • Assists Stroke Program Director as liaison with other organizations, EMS, Aero-medical and other healthcare facilities.
