Job Summary
The Occupational Medicine Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care focused on the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and management of work-related injuries and illnesses. The NP works in collaboration with physicians, employers, safety personnel, and healthcare providers to promote employee health, ensure regulatory compliance, and support safe return-to-work strategies. Evaluate, diagnose, and treat work-related injuries and illnesses in accordance with occupational health standards and regulatory guidelines.
Conduct pre-employment, periodic, and return-to-work physical examinations.
Perform functional capacity evaluations (FCEs), drug and alcohol testing, TB screenings, immunizations, and other health surveillance exams.
Collaborate with employers to support workers' compensation claims and return-to-work planning.
Educate patients on injury prevention, ergonomics, safe work practices, and chronic disease management.
Maintain detailed documentation in compliance with OSHA, DOT, and state/federal guidelines.
Communicate with case managers, safety officers, and HR departments to coordinate employee care.
Participate in wellness and health promotion programs tailored to the workplace.
Assist in the development of occupational health protocols and policies.
Ensure timely and appropriate referral to specialty care as needed.
Qualifications
Masters or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
If APRN was licensed prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred.
Experience in occupational medicine, urgent care, emergency medicine, or internal medicine preferred.
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice.
Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.
State Controlled Substance License (if required by State)
National board certification as a Family (FNP-BC) or (FNPC), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP-BC) or (A-GNP), Adult (ANP-C).
Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation between documents exists.
