The UT MD Anderson is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. Within the General Oncology/Lyndon B. Johnson Oncology Program, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) or Physician Assistant (PA) plays a vital role in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care to individuals with gynecologic cancers across the care continuum. The APP or PA collaborates closely with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to support both acute care and ambulatory services. This APP or PA role is integral to ensuring continuity of care, clinical excellence, and patient safety within UT MD Anderson. The APP or PA contributes to diagnosis, treatment, symptom management, and survivorship support, while also participating in education and research initiatives. The APP or PA position supports high-quality outcomes by coordinating care, performing procedures, and enhancing communication across care teams.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of experience in both acute care and/or ambulatory settings.

Responsibilities

Patient Assessment
Provide quality patient care aligned with diagnosis, treatment plan, age group, and developmental needs
Perform medical histories, episodic physical exams, and psychosocial assessments
Report findings and test results to physicians
Monitor laboratory, radiographic, clinical, and procedural data
Review assessment findings and treatment plans with physicians

Intervention & Evaluation
Prevent, minimize, and manage symptoms and treatment-related toxicities
Evaluate patient response and modify care under physician supervision when required
Coordinate care activities, write orders, and request consultations
Provide emergency triage and initiate care until physician arrival
Manage patient crises until physician support is available
Write prescriptions as needed
Document patient care including notes, discharge summaries, and correspondence
Order diagnostic studies including labs, imaging, and scans
Provide psychological support to patients and families
Coordinate appointments, consultations, and follow-up care

Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures
Complete training and demonstrate competency in clinical procedures
Perform procedures such as suture removal, wound care, drain removal, and catheter removal
Conduct pelvic exams, pap smears, and gynecologic biopsies
Administer medications via intravenous, intra-arterial, and intraperitoneal routes
Obtain blood samples from venous and central lines
Assist with or remove radium sources and intracavitary systems

Education & Research
Educate patients and families on disease, treatment, and symptom management
Promote health behaviors and self-care through education and counseling
Develop and contribute to educational materials for staff
Participate in continuing education and professional development activities
Support orientation, fellowship, and residency education programs
Contribute to research initiatives and apply evidence-based practices
Assist with research protocol implementation and development

Consultation & Collaboration
Provide consultation to healthcare professionals within and outside LBJ Hospital
Collaborate across disciplines to coordinate care and evaluate treatment plans
Recommend therapeutic measures for symptom relief
Facilitate communication between patients, families, and care teams
Assist with patient data retrieval and documentation

APRN or Physician Assistant

EDUCATION:
Required:
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.
Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

Physician Assistant
Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.

EXPERIENCE:
Preferred: At least 1-2 years of Oncology experience as an Advanced Practice Provider.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION:
Required:
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
All of the following:
Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If working in the following departments: Pediatric - Patient Care (113100).
MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Physician Assistant
All of the following:
PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
