Nurse Practitioner Jobs in District of Columbia
A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a critical role in the advanced practitioner industry, holding the responsibility for providing specialized health care services in a wide range of fields. NPs are registered nurses with additional education and training, typically at the master's or doctorate level. They often have the ability to diagnose and treat medical conditions, prescribe medication, and carry out procedures within their specialized area of practice, which can vary from primary care to pediatrics, psychiatry, or gerontology. They also provide health education, counseling, and preventive services to their patients, working independently or as part of a healthcare team.
Before becoming a Nurse Practitioner, one may have roles such as a Registered Nurse (RN), Critical Care Nurse, or Pediatric Nurse. An NP should have strong communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and excellent problem-solving abilities. Critical certifications include the Registered Nurse (RN) license, and specialized NP certification within their chosen area of practice, such as the Family Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified (FNP-BC) or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified (PNP-BC) certifications. It's also important for NPs to maintain ongoing professional development and continuing education to stay updated with advancements in healthcare.
